Preventive Care
Preventive care is the most important health care you can receive to make sure you are healthy for years to come. Dr. Bruner-Hill is dedicated to providing comprehensive preventive care services that are designed to maintain your health and well-being for the long term. Dr. Bruner-Hill is not just an ordinary healthcare provider. She takes the time and care to sit down with each of her patients and get to know them on a deeper and more personal level to ensure they get the health care they need. Our preventive care services are no different.
Preventive Care for All Ages
Preventive care takes into account all the conditions you have the potential to get but do not necessarily have symptoms for. Common preventive services we recommend for all ages include:
Diabetes can affect anyone at any age. For this reason, it is important for men, women, and children to get their blood-sugar levels checked regularly and get screened for diabetes once each year. If you are experiencing diabetes-related symptoms, such as frequent peeing, being very thirsty, losing weight without trying, or having numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, it is important you get screened for diabetes as soon as you can.
When was the last time you had your eyes checked? If you are like many Americans, it has probably been too long. Vision exams are recommended at least once every one to two years, because vision changes as men, women, and children get older. Dr. Bruner-Hill can perform a vision screening using the Snellen eye chart. After reviewing the results, if needed, Dr. Bruner-Hill will recommend you to a nearby eye doctor for additional treatment.
People often get their hearing checked as children, but don’t always find the time for it as adults. That being said, we recommend getting your hearing tested at least once every three to five years to make sure you are still hearing well. If you need hearing aids, Dr. Bruner-Hill will be happy to help.
Cholesterol screening is both easy and important for your overall health. Men and women tend to have issues with high cholesterol as they get older. Although common, it can cause a wide range of problems – including heart disease – if left untreated. If Dr. Bruner-Hill finds that you do have high cholesterol, she will be happy to provide you with the right medication and dietary guidelines to help you get back into a healthy range.
Skin cancer is common and can sneak up on you before you know it. Annual skin exams are recommended for men, women, and children to ensure their skin stays healthy. During this exam, Dr. Bruner-Hill will examine any moles or marks on your body to determine whether or not they need to be biopsied or tested for cancer.
HIV does not have to control your life anymore with the help of preventive screening and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is a medication for those who believe they have had exposure or are at risk of having an exposure to HIV. When taken as directed by your provider, PrEP can be 99 percent effective against the contraction of HIV.
Preventive Care for Older Adults
Older men and women have a unique set of preventive care services that best suit their individual needs. These services include but are not limited to the following:
As our loved ones get older, we may begin to realize they are not as sharp as they once used to be. Cognitive decline is common among the older adult population. For this reason, cognitive screenings are recommended regularly to keep track of their intellectual health and ensure they get the health care they need for their specific situations.
Between the ages of 40 and 65, men and women should start receiving regular screenings for colorectal cancer. This type of cancer is common throughout the older adult population and can be very serious when left untreated. Ask Dr. Bruner-Hill if it is time for you to get screened for colorectal cancer, so you can make an appointment at your earliest convenience and get ahead of your health.
